Johns Hopkins University students were asked to submerge their hands in ice-cold water for as long as they could. Some students were told to think of a romantic activity such as kissing or cuddling, while others were told to think of mundane tasks. The romantic-thinking group was able to keep their hands in the water for twice as long and reported feeling less pain, anxiety an overall mood boost.
