In early October, the New England Journal of Medicine reported a study that compared physical therapy, chiropractic and the reading of a back school booklet, for the care of acute low back pain. The findings are summarized as follows: “Chiropractors are no more effective than physical therapists in treating lower back pain, and both are only marginally successful at easing their patients’ symptoms. This study is quite opposite the findings of most other studies on chiropractic including a 1994 report by the United States Agency for Health Care Policy Research in which it was concluded that relief can be accomplished with spinal adjustments.
