Prescription drugs are not commonly used to treat neck pain. Physicians normally hesitate to prescribe medication for neck pain until tests have been administered that verify that pain needs to be treated. The main reason for this is that prescription drugs used for treatment of neck pain are powerful and can cause marked side effects.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Choose the Right Kind

Oral steroids should be used  for severe neck pain that is not relieved with use of non-prescription medications. Remember that steroids should be taken for a maximum of 7 days.

Let your doctor know if you have diabetes or an infection because use of steroids has the potential of causing serious side effects by interfering with certain natural bodily processes.

If you have recently been injured and have severe pain, discuss narcotic pain medications with your physician.

Since narcotics can be addictive, let your doctor know if you have had issues with drug addiction in the past. Although they may offer some relief in the short term, extended use can lead to addiction.

Remember that after 10-14 days, narcotic drugs should be discontinued because a tolerance develops and the narcotics will no longer be effective.

If neck pain is caused by muscle spasms, muscle relaxants may be helpful. People who suffer from extreme stress may especially benefit from using muscle relaxants as they have a universal calming effect.

Muscle relaxants should not be taken if you must drive, focus on details or balance yourself well. Using this kind of medication may have a significant impact on your performance capabilities.
